My first cat has one helluva story

I'll keep this as brief as I can but I tend to ramble. I also am amazed at the amount of cat subreddits and just found this one and wanted to share after lurking XD

Anyways I'll just say I'm a pet person and I've always wanted a cat. Unfortunately for me I also have asthma, and was a really sick kid. Pet dander was a huge trigger when I was younger, and have had hospital stays from having sleepovers at friends houses that had a cat.

This was a long time ago and luckily for me, over the years, I've been able to have dogs and now a cat finally. After 30+ years of waiting I'm able to have one.

So a year ago my partner and I started looking at shelters for one. The cat we were interested had quite a story unbeknownst to us.

Koda was seized from owners who lived rurally and had hundreds of cats and dogs. They were charged with multiple counts of animal hoarding, ab e, neglect, and even torture.
  • 11
By the time of the seizure it's estimated the owners panicked and k led around 200 animals that were unaccounted for. He's 7 years old and was likely living in a cage, although some cats were also living in sheds. I'm not

sure if he'd been living this way his whole life or not. He had a couple surgeries at the shelter before becoming available to adopt. Now he has a permanent head tilt, ataxic gait, and fhv.
  • 13
He's also missing some teeth. He had a hernia, ear infection and Giardia as well.

I've had him over a year now and he's not nearly as wobbly, and has even been able to jump on the bed by himself! He's such a character. Super confident and friendly.
  • 16
He's really a big ham. At first he was very unsure about soft surfaces and would only sleep on cardboard boxes or his cardboard scratcher. After 6
  • 17
months he'd sleep on the bed next to me but was wary of blankets, so none could be touching him. After 1 whole year he finally started laying on blankets and realized he loved it!
  • 18
I'm so grateful to be able to have a cat, and so glad it's him! I'll include the first picture I got of him, when he we first got home from the shelter.

frolicndetour He is absolutely beautiful. I'm so glad he has a loving home after a rough few years!

X_Wheeze_souffle That second picture is sending me. "And I'll do it again!"
  • 22
StillSea9674 OP Haha something he would be thinking too, he loves chaos. Also good day to you!
  • 23
I_eat_too_many_chips Hes gorgeous!! I loved reading his story, amd so glad you gave him a second chance at life. Once you earn a rescue kitty's trust it makes it even more special
  • 24
StillSea9674 OP Aww thanks! He's a lover but unsure about strange things, which I'm assuming because it must be new and scary to him.
  • 25
Glibasme What a beautiful thing to come out of something so horrible. He's adorable and so lucky to have found you. He deserves it all!
  • 26
StillSea9674 OP Thanks, and I'm trying my best to make it up to him! Just started growing a catnip plant for him and discovered he much prefers it fresh lol

No_Buffalo1451 Oh he's beautiful!! ✓ On the head tilt issue, what was the diagnosis with that? I only ask because my little buddy Hobbes has a vestibular disorder(feline vertigo)
  • 28
as he's also deaf. He has a permanent slight head tilt but dose have vertigo episodes where the tilt is 45° (mild) or 90° (extreme) for a few hours.
  • 29
I just have yet to see another cat with a head tilting issue so I'm curious.
  • 30
StillSea9674 OP Both my vet and the shelter vets said that inner ear infections can cause a head tilt but since they don't know his history wouldn't definitively say anything.
  • 31
His head tilt has remained pretty much the same but his walking/jumping has greatly improved since I've had him!
  • 32
Desperate_Tooth_8266 Thank you for giving him a better life. Not that it was hard doing better than the abysmal standard that he was living at before, but it's obvious you're doing above and beyond for him. So thank you for that. I hope your family gets to have many more amazing years with this cutie.

isaac32767 He looks awfully mellow for a cat that's been through that kind of h I. You must have exceptionally positive vibes.
